I wrote Gimmie because I wanted to reintroduce myself to my audience and to the world as my whole self. I am a black queer woman and just living and being vocal in that identity is an act of resistance. At this particular time as different people start to acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement I want to emphasize that all Black lives matter, this includes Black queer and trans lives. A lot of the world is still engulfed in homophobia and transphobia so I wanted to put myself out there so that marginalized voices know I'm on their side. I want to put the intersectionality of black identity out there. I embrace all of my identity and I hope this song encourages others to do the same. I wanted to drop my song along with the parade because of the resilience, strength, diversity and of course unapologetic flair that the LGBTQ+ community is made of - I wanted to make a positive contribution to the celebration.
